What are you growing in your garden this year ?

2017 Garden Plot and Flower Planting

Its been so warm in StLouis the past few weeks I went ahead and started some garden work.  3 kinds of lettuce were started as well as a few sweet carrots.

I don’t trust Big Business and the poison they peddle in the grocery store. Today I started some cool weather plants and sowed 3 types of Lettuce and Sweet Carrots.
I couldn’t wait any longer to get the garden started. Its too early to be truthful. I’m sure I’ll have to protect the future plants from frosts that I know are the norm in the Midwest this time of year.
I felt it mandatory to start protecting numero'uno and make sure at least my diet is clean as can be.

Big Business is poisoning the food, poisoning the water, poisoning the air....
You’ve been warned protect yourself.

Garden seeds are cheap and working with dirt for some reason will make a body feel good!

The following flower planting Facebook Photo was done in the strip next to the fence.

I've also planted flowers, trees, and grass in a few more spots around the yard.  I will be posting progress photos and additional pictures of the 2017 Gardens and Flowers in the near future.

Growing your own food is the greatest thing you can do to ensure the good health of you and your family.  It will also save you $$$.

Cheers, Scotty 3/15/17

  • I've found that making a simple and quick graphic image to use as a visual tool to explain a building system repair to a client is easier when I provide a "non technical" image of the proposed work to be done.
  • Why GAF EverGuard® TPO
    • Outperforms standard TPO in heat aging and UV tests—the best predictors of TPO performance
      - Independent TPO Study proves EverGuard® TPO 60 mil Membrane is the best standard TPO in accelerated aging. View the key findings and full study here.
      - After accelerated heat aging at 275°F (135°C) for 112 days, EverGuard® TPO showed no cracking—while every one of the competitors’ samples had failed!
      - UV testing—Greater than 2.5 times the industry standard (ASTM D6878 weather resistance test)
    • Guarantees are available up to 25 years when using EverGuard® TPO 60 mil Membrane.*
    • Easier to install due to:
      - Large welding window
      - Most complete line of accessories
      - 10' (3.05 m) wide sheets

  • DESCRIPTION STRUCTODEK HD is not only an integral roofing system component; it also makes roofing easier with physical properties that generate structural rigidity and dimensional stability. The wood fiberboard composition of STRUCTODEK HD possesses natural bonding qualities, resulting in superior adhesion capabilities. Adhesive tightly grasps the fibers of STRUCTODEK HD without causing excess absorption, providing a solid and secure roof system which bonds very well with many asphalt, coal tar, and cold-process adhesive products. The lightweight nature of STRUCTODEK HD is better than heavier alternatives and will keep the roof load below the specified maximum weight. Source

Kevin at Travis Roofing Supply was a great help in outlining the proper materials and needed prep to ensure the TPO roofing will meet and exceed the expectations of the Investment Property Owner plus the 25 year product guarranty.

    Home Fire Repair and Remodel

The following photos are images from the job site, highlighting areas that the prior weatherization crews missed -when they were insulating this building.

The missing insulation in critical areas causes greater energy needs - adding to the carbon footprint of this home.

The Hemp Insulation Solutions to Thermal Bridging
Industrial Hemp Insulation stops thermal bridging!
Industrial Hemp Insulation stops thermal bridging!

Fire repair, gut rehab- property was one of the most insulated buildings I've worked on in StLouis (that wasn't mine). The prior so called "energy experts" who installed all the insulation, missed insulting the spots most needed.
In this home's lower floor is where a garage and storage rooms are located. There are two giant heat traps one of which extends thru the home to the roof area- the chimney & The other heat sink is the metal post and beam system that supports the second floor;floor.
Heat and cold transfer thru denser materials faster and more efficiently that a porous substance.
All the second floor boards are supported by this heat sink. This allows the heat and cold a way into the building thru conduction- thermal conductivity.
The homes chimney is also located in the coldest part of the home and thermally conducts all the absorbed heat & cold into the second floor.
To stop the thermal conductivity- building owner should insulate both of these areas and stop the heat or cold from ever reaching the heat sinks. By wrapping the chimney & metal it will never get cold or hot eliminating thermal conductivity.

Under Stair Movable Storage Unit Plans

Open Source Design Build Drawings- Under Stair Movable Storage Unit Plan

I was asked to design and build customstorage units for underneath a set of basementstairs.

Here are the Design Build Drawings in the following slide show presentation.  Give it a minute to load, the controls are in the lower left, if you have questions, comments, or complaint use the contact form and someone will address your concern.

    Design Build Drawings-

    Under Stair Movable Storage

    Under Stair Movable Storage Plan

Design Issues Solved by enabling the 3 storage units to move independently.

Allowing the Movable Storage Units to be completely removed from the space- gives all the needed room for future cleaning and inspections.

The added benefit of having movable storage units in a basement type setting- where water is known to cause damage to things left directly on the floor.  With the Movable Storage Units- the size and height of the caster wheels chosen will determine the bottom shelf height distance off the floor- 2 inches or greater.

This provides Safety to your items in Storage for low water basement flooding issues.

      DIY Suggestions
      • Be careful in choosing the height of the Caster Wheels.
      • Too tall of wheels will cause a "Tip Hazard" of Movable Storage Unit.
      • Width of wheel is determine by floor covering- example carpet wide wheel, concrete narrow wheel.
      • Always store heavier items on lowest shelf.
Grand Total of: 120,960 cu in  (4,480 cu ft) Minimum Storage Space created with the Movable Storage Units

      Small:     20,160 cu in
      Medium: 40,320 cu in
      Large:     60,480 cu in

This is like having the storage capabilities of a second kitchen.
