Scotts, why isn't the news media holding the presidential candidates accountable on climate change?
Rick Perry claims the science isn't settled on climate change.1 Michele Bachmann calls climate science "manufactured science."2 Herman Cain doesn't believe in global warming either3 and Mitt Romney isn't sure whether or not human-caused climate change is occurring (but he opposes restrictions on carbon pollution regardless).4
And yet, the media isn't challenging the candidates on their outrageous, anti-science statements. In fact, during the CNN/Tea Party debate in September, environmental issues got more airtime during the commercial breaks – with paid advertising from Big Oil and Dirty Coal – than during the debate itself.
CNN is hosting another debate this Tuesday, October 18th, so now is the chance to make our voices heard.
The American people support taking action to address the climate crisis. A recent voter survey that LCV released found that 71% of Americans – including 55% of Republicans – support EPA efforts to reduce global warming pollution.5
That's not surprising when you consider that we're already feeling the impacts of climate change. For example, this year has seen record flooding in the Mississippi and Missouri rivers and wildfires raging across Texas, Arizona and throughout the West. Additionally, all 50 states set record high temperatures this past July.6
We know that we must take action to combat climate change. There is overwhelming scientific evidence showing that human activities are contributing to climate change. And yet, many of the Republican presidential candidates don't even believe in climate change.

The purpose of the USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter scholarship program is to provide green building & sustainability education and training for those who normally would not have access or could not afford it. Scholarship recipients will attend a regional conference where they can see the latest in green products, network with others, and attend specialized workshops.

When our teachers, police officers, and firefighters earn a paycheck, they often pay a higher percentage in taxes than executives of the largest and most profitable corporations. It makes no sense.
The Buffett rule -- named after the billionaire investor who actually asked to pay more in taxes -- would make sure that middle-class families do not pay a higher percentage than millionaires and billionaires.
There's a groundswell of support for the Buffett rule -- more than 95% of those who responded to my recent online poll support it and so do the Missourians I talked to when I was home last week.
Now it's time to take the next step, and I want you to take it with me.
Let's send a message to the 12 members of the congressional super committee -- who are now in discussions about how to get our national debt under control -- by signing a petition urging them to include the Buffett rule in their final proposal.
Continuing to give millionaires and billionaires tax giveaways while the middle class is struggling is no way to solve our debt problem.
While I'm fighting to protect Medicare and Social Security, Republicans are coddling the millionaires and billionaires who line their campaign coffers.
But if we keep the public pressure on, I'm confident we can convince a simple majority of the super committee members to stand with middle-class families across America. That's what we need.
