Producer of Baby Nutrition Products Saving CO2 Based on Special "Green Tariff" article found at: http://www.renewable-energy-sources.com/2010/07/16/ukraine-milk-company-powered-by-4000-cows-and-ge-biogas-engine/comment-page-1/#comment-3160

Cow manure is being converted to energy at the first biogas cogeneration plant in the Ukraine. The facility, which is powered by 4,000 cows and a GE (NYSE: GE) Jenbacher gas engine, has recently completed nine months of successful operation at the Ukrainian Milk Company Ltd., located near Kiev.

The excess power produced at the plant is being sold to the grid. The Ukrainian Milk Company, which produces milk for baby nutrition products, received the license for selling power to the grid based on the "green" tariff, which is being approved by Ukraine authorities. According to the law, the "green" tariff is "a special tariff for electricity generated at the power plants with use of alternative energy sources."

The new combined heat and power (CHP) plant is powered by a GE JMC 312 containerized cogeneration model gas engine and is able to substitute the equivalent of 1.2 million cubic meters of natural gas annually and, therefore, is projected to reduce the equivalent of 18,000 metric tons of CO2. Once converted into biogas, the manure from the cows produces 625 kW of electricity and 686 kW of thermal output.

This is GE's first order from the biogas plant construction company ZORG. The unit was sold to ZORG through GE's distributor and service provider in the Ukraine, SINAPSE. "Based on the top service provided by SINAPSE during the commissioning and operation of the new GE CHP plant, we look forward to working with them again and using GE's Jenbacher products for future projects we have planned," said Igor Aksyutov, commercial director of ZORG Ukraine.

The first stage of operation for the plant took place during the most severe winter in the last 20 years, with constant minus temperatures reaching -25°C to -30°C. Despite the cold temperatures, the operation of the plant remained at a favorable level.

Biogas offers customers several advantages. It provides an alternative disposal of dung, liquid manure and organic waste, while simultaneously harnessing them as an energy source, a substitute for conventional fuels. It also has the high potential for reduction in greenhouse gases and is highly efficient for combined on-site power and heat generation. In addition, the remaining substrate from the digester can be used as high-quality, agricultural fertilizer, characterized by neutralizing the acid effect with a higher ph-value, keeping nutrients retained and nearly odorless.

"The disposal and treatment of biological waste represents a major challenge for the waste industry. Our Jenbacher biogas-fueled gas engines improve waste management while maximizing the use of cow manure, an economical energy supply," said Prady Iyyanki, CEO-gas engines for GE Power & Water. "We are pleased that our technology is a part of the first biogas plant in operation in the Ukraine and applaud the region for seeking new renewable and alternative ways to create cleaner energy."

GE has several biogas projects throughout the world. China has adopted both cow and chicken manure applications. Once completed, the recently announced project at the Liaoning Huishan Cow Farm in China will become the world's largest biogas project based on cow manure. In addition, GE's Jenbacher gas engines are using biogas created from chicken manure to generate needed power and heat at the Beijing Deqingyuan Chicken Farm Waste Utilization Plant, a large chicken farm north of Beijing, and in July 2009, GE's biogas engines began to power China's largest chicken waste biogas-energy plant at the Minhe Animal Husbandry.

Cow manure also is helping to address northwestern India's mounting energy environmental needs and is allowing a U.S. dairy farm to support the expansion of renewable energy production. A GE Jenbacher biogas engine is powering a successful demonstration cattle manure-methane cogeneration plant at Haebowal, a large dairy complex in Punjab, India, while GE's biogas engine technology is generating 633 kilowatts of renewable energy at United States-based Crave Brothers Farm, LLC, in Waterloo, Wisc. Crave Brothers has been able to reduce operational costs and the environmental impacts of its dairy operations, and the surplus power it sells to the regional grid helps support the expansion of renewable energy production.

ZORG is a leading supplier of turn-key biogas solutions in the Ukrainian market. The company offers a full range of engineering services for biogas, as well as designs, builds and produces biogas plants. ZORG works globally and currently has a number of projects in CIS countries.

Encore Presentation: Monday, July 19 at 10PM on Science Channel
Special Presentation: Sunday, July 25 at 10PM on Planet Green

Starting from an offshore oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, Sanjayan looks at how the abundance of the planet's energy fuels every aspect of life on Earth. From wind, water, the sun, volcanoes and hurricanes, to the smallest cells to the tallest trees, Earth has the natural energy to power the planet but mankind is not using it. What can humans learn from the creation of the natural world that will help create energy?

Striking a Balance
World Premiere: Sunday, July 18 at 8PM on Discovery Channel
Encore Presentation: Tuesday, July 20 at 9PM on Science Channel
Special Presentation: Monday, July 26 at 9PM on Planet Green

We are bombarded daily with conflicting messages about energy from sources with vastly different agendas and motives. This episode filters out politics and special interests by looking at numbers: How many people will be on the planet by 2050 and how much energy will we need? What happens if we grow and consume at our current rate? It's common knowledge that we use enormous amounts of energy, but until it's quantified, it̢۪s impossible to grasp the true extent of how much is wasted.

Leading the Charge
World Premiere: Sunday, July 18 at 9PM on Discovery Channel
Encore Presentation: Tuesday, July 20 at 10PM on Science Channel
Special Presentation: Monday, July 26 at 10PM on Planet Green

Unlikely characters and companies are leading the charge in an energy sea change. The U.S. Navy, China, and even the Empire State Building (or your next-door neighbor) â€" when it comes to energy, these unlikely forces are slashing their carbon footprints and propelling the new economy. But it's happening around the world faster than in the United States. From highly efficient wind turbines to cutting-edge solar cells, the U.S. has an unprecedented track record for discovering the technologies to break our fossil fuel addiction, but rather than developing and employing them here at home, it has also developed a knack for giving them away.

$1 Dollar Spent Earns $2 Dollars

Rule of Thumb-For Every $1 Dollar Spent on Weatherizing your Home will Return $2 Dollars in Actual Savings !!!

in Actual Savings on your Energy Bills. In some instances your dollars will earn additional savings in your energy bills.
According to US National Weather Analysis. The entire World is enduring a record setting year. Maybe its time to reconsider adding some "Green" "Eco Friendly" changes to your Home and 'Reduce Climate Change'. I'm not going to bore you with Stats and Figures. I'll just try to explain in everyday language Three (3) Green Build Tips that can be added to your Home, easy and afford-ably.

If you choose to hire outside assistance Scotts Contracting St Louis Renewable Energy is available for any Green Projects Needed in your Home. Click here to email Scotty and Set Up a Free Green Site Inspection Green Building Tip 1-Doors and Windows-

  • Weatherstripping-should seal the home from the exterior temperature and wind. New Windows and Doors come with Factory Installed weatherstrips that aide in providing this barrier. Older Windows and Doors sometimes have and sometimes not or are wore out. Replace or Install weatherstripping. Last time I looked at Home Depot there was about 30 various kinds of weather stripping available. Prices range from $5 - $25. Most have instructions included and Home Depot also offers instructional classes on installing weather stripping.

Green Building Tip 2-Attic (read entire posting here)

  • Air Infiltration areas be resolved before adding insulation- Stop the Air (Hot or Cold) From Entering or Leaving a Home.
  • Attic Insulation Suggested Guidelines. I recommend a minimum of (July 19,2010 Correction) R26
  • Adding Radiant Barriers in a nutshell this bounces the Exterior Temperature back outside and acts as a Vapor Barrier!
Green Building Tip 3 Exterior Walls- Minimum Suggestions
  • Seal for Leaks with, caulking and spray foam, from anything that is sticking out of your Home. This could come from the Air Conditioning Unit, various wires for Telephone and Cable lines. The Power Line or Electric Line. [ "IF YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO WORK ON ELECTRICITY "NEVER TOUCH POWER LINES ENTERING YOUR HOME"] You can caulk around hole where it enters you House though. Once again: never touch power lines .
  • Insulation for walls is R13 minimum which is (3- 3 ½ inches of Insulation)
  • Vapor Barrier- Stops the Water and Air From Enerting your Home usually located behind the exterior finish of your home.

Municipal Finance Programs (PACE)

Municipal Finance Programs (PACE)

happy_house_LG1When it comes to bringing solar to the mainstream, innovations in financing are as important as innovations in technology. There's a new finance tool that local governments can use to support green retrofits in their communities. These PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) programs help property owners overcome the upfront cost barrier of solar and energy efficiency improvements.

We are working to make PACE an effective way to go solar nationwide. We hope you'll help.

understanding-PACE2-300x165
PACE is a new model based on some pretty complex finance mechanisms. It can all be a little tricky to fully understand, so we've compiled fact sheets, white papers and other information to get you started.

Authorizing PACEState law must first authorize local governments to implement PACE programs. 22 states now have PACE legislation in place. That leaves 28 to go. Here are resources for enabling PACE at the state level.

rolling out PACE
Local governments in these states have the authority to run PACE programs: CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, LA, MD, ME, MO, MN, NC, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, TX,  VA, VT, WI. Click here for resources to help cities and counties launch PACE.

Support PACE-(Property Accessed Clean Energy and Federal Housing Finance Agency)

Protect PACE Clean Energy Retrofit Programs

Cities and counties throughout the U.S. are developing new finance programs that help Americans install solar and improve the efficiency of their homes and businesses.  Called Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE), these programs enable local governments bring new green jobs, energy bill savings, and environmental benefits to their communities.

Now the lending giants at Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and their regulators at FHFA are trying to stop these programs in their tracks. They're attacking a century-old local government right and throwing a massive wrench in American green job growth and investment. It's time for legislative action.

Click here-Can you urge your representatives in Congress to support legislation that gets PACE back on track?

July 16-PACE- Restore PACE or Resign

Subject: ICLEI to FHFA Acting Director: Restore PACE or Resign ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Don Knapp <don.kn...@iclei.org> Date: Jul 16, 1:54 pm Subject: ICLEI to FHFA Acting Director: Restore PACE or Resign To: PACE Discussion http://www.icleiusa.org/blog/iclei-usa-to-fhfa-director-restore-pace-... ICLEI USA continues to exert pressure on federal decision-makers to reverse their policy and save local governments' property-assessed clean energy (PACE) programs. Today, we joined members of Congress in calling for Federal Housing Finance Agency Acting Director Edward DeMarco to step down, unless he works with local governments to restore critical funding to PACE programs in 22 states including California. Martin Chavez, ICLEI USA Executive Director, released the following statement: Acting Director DeMarco should take a deep breath, apologize to the American people for distorting the record on PACE, and reverse course. If he's not willing to restore PACE funding as requested by Congress, he should follow their suggestion and resign. In recent public comments, Acting Director DeMarco has falsely described Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programs as "loans" and "credit risks," which is both misleading and inaccurate. Mr. DeMarco's comments follow recent actions by the FHFA at the direction of loan giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that severely restrict a local government's ability to implement PACE-enabling programs. In responding to a recent lawsuit filed by California Attorney General, Jerry Brown, on behalf of local governments, Mr. DeMarco said his agency will fight Brown's lawsuit in order to protect 'taxpayers, lenders and both mortgage programs [Fannie and Freddie]." "We should not allow Acting Director DeMarco to destroy one of the most innovative and energy efficient tools available to homeowners and local governments today," said *Patrick Hays, Mayor of North Little Rock, AR, President of ICLEI USA, and Chairman of the Board of Directors*. "As a mayor, I am reminded everyday of the realities of persistently high unemployment, a fragile economy and the impact that climate change is having on our communities. Sadly, it appears that Mr. DeMarco is putting Freddie and Fannie's interests first on his list, leaving the American taxpayer behind," added Mayor Hays. Contrary to Mr. DeMarco's statements, PACE programs do not operate using traditional loan mechanisms. Local governments instead finance the upfront costs through tax assessments, which are paid incrementally in small amounts through a homeowner's annual property tax bills. Similar assessment mechanisms are used by local governments and municipalities to fund sewers, sidewalks, schools, hospitals and other public projects. "As a government official and a head of a federally mandated agency designated to protect taxpayers, it appears Acting Director DeMarco is more interested in protecting Fannie and Freddie rather than helping homeowners during this devastating economy," said *Martin J. Chavez, Executive Director, ICLEI USA and three-term mayor of Albuquerque, NM*. "Mr. DeMarco has severely damaged his credibility with Members of Congress and the American people by refusing to restore funding to innovative PACE programs that reduce energy and create much needed jobs in California and 21 other states," added Mayor Chavez. Recently, several Members of Congress led by Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) sent a letter to Acting Director DeMarco asking him to step down from his position if he could not find a workable resolution to the new FHFA restrictions to PACE programs. ICLEI USA has launched a nationwide effort calling on its 600+plus members across the country to contact the President and Congress, particularly the key committees with oversight authority to overturn the new FHFA regulations. Some of the states that are currently engaged in PACE include, AZ, MD, OR, CA, NV, TX, CO, NM, VT, FL, NY, VA, HI, NC, WI, IL, OH, LA, OK, among others. -- Don Knapp Senior Communications Officer ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability USA 436 14th St., Suite 1520 Oakland, CA 94612 Tel: (510) 844-0699, Ext. 315 Fax: (510) 844-0698 Website:www.icleiusa.org ================================ Register Now for the 2010 ICLEI Local Action Summit! Local Governments for Sustainability
About me:
ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) is a membership association of local governments committed to advancing climate protection and sustainable development. Since its inception in 1993, ICLEI has grown to include nearly 1,000 cities in the world, more than 300 of which are in the United States. To help members achieve tangible reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts, ICLEI provides: tools, technical expertise, software training, policy assistance and national and international peer networks. Through this work, ICLEI helped local governments reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 23 million tons in 2005 alone. This translates into about $600 million in annual cumulative savings, largely on energy expenditures. Local governments have led the effort in recent years to envision, accelerate and achieve strong climate protection goals, and ICLEI is proud to support and facilitate their efforts to create cleaner, healthier, economically viable communities.
